Notice to Members:

A community information meeting to discuss amendments to Chipewyan Prairie First Nation’s (“CPFN”) election code will be held on December 7, 2021 at the Multiplex in Janvier, Alberta from 6:30 – 8:30 pm MST. There is also a link to attend via Zoom.

As you may be aware, on June 7, 2021, the Federal Court of Canada held that the eligibility provision of CPFN’s Election Code that required both voters and candidates to reside on-reserve for a period of 6 months before an election was unconstitutional and struck the requirement from CPFN’s Election Code. Chief and Council believe strongly in CPFN’s right to self-governance. Members may have different opinions on the outcome of this decision, but it is disappointing for CPFN as a Nation to have our rights of self-government overridden by Canada’s colonial courts.

Over the past several months, Chief and Council have been working diligently to draft amendments to CPFN’s election code and will present the draft election code at the community information meeting in order to obtain feedback from members.

Members will also have the opportunity to provide feedback on the election code by sending their comments to before Dec. 15, 2021

A copy of the draft election code can be found by accessing the link below.
